Access to high-quality care at the Illinois College of Optometry has a profound impact on the lives of patients.

No one understands this better than William J. Skoog, OD ’21. As an alum, a faculty member since 2024, and a clinician, he witnesses the need firsthand, which fuels his commitment to giving back.

Every month, Dr. Skoog makes a recurring donation to Vision of Hope, ICO’s fund that ensures patients, regardless of income or insurance, can receive the eyecare they require.

“As a student, I never imagined my path would lead to teaching and research,” he reflects. “But ICO changed my perspective.” After earning his OD and completing a residency in Cornea and Contact Lenses, Dr. Skoog returned to ICO in a new role. The college’s diverse patient base, complex clinical cases, and urban setting provided rare opportunities for professional growth, but something deeper drew him in.

“I was surrounded by faculty who were genuinely happy to be here,” he says. “There was a sense of joy and purpose in their work. They were deeply committed to their students, to patient care, and to the mission of the college.”

But what impressed him most was what happened outside the clinic. He noticed that their commitment didn’t stop at the classroom door. They gave financially, too—consistently and generously. “From the top down.”

That example stayed with him.

So, in 2024, when ICO’s Giving Tuesday appeal arrived, Dr. Skoog didn’t hesitate. Giving Tuesday at ICO is a time when the entire community, students, faculty, staff, and alumni rallies together for a shared purpose: keeping care accessible to those who need it most.

He contributed to ensure that the Vision of Hope fund remains strong because its impact is visible, immediate, and lasting. It’s not just about eye care. “Many of our patients have systemic health issues. Vision of Hope allows us to deliver the kind of comprehensive, coordinated care that can make a significant impact in someone’s life.”

Now a recurring donor, Dr. Skoog hopes his support encourages fellow recent alumni to consider their own philanthropy. “We want to give with purpose. We want to know where our donations go and what they support. ICO has projects like updating treatment areas, launching new projects, and sustaining programs like Vision of Hope, that directly impact patients and students.”

“We’re just getting started in our careers, but we’ve already received so much: the education, the clinical experience, the mentorship. ICO gave us something truly unique,” he says. “By giving, we help ensure ICO remains competitive and attractive to future students, especially as more optometry schools open. Giving is a way to make that happen.”
