Jeff Smith A Tradition of Generosity

For generations, alumni have been at the heart of ICO’s strength—advancing the profession and supporting those who follow in their footsteps. This year, that tradition was powerfully reaffirmed through the generosity, service, and leadership of Jeff W. Smith, OD ’83, MBA, who made a $1 million endowment commitment this spring to support the next generation of optometrists.
“At a time when the cost of higher education continues to rise nationwide, scholarship support is more important than ever,” said President Mark Colip. “Dr. Smith’s generosity will help reduce financial barriers for students while creating new opportunities for future generations of optometrists. His commitment reflects not only a deep belief in ICO, but also in the future of the profession.”
Extraordinary in its scale, the gift reflects Dr. Smith’s longstanding dedication to ICO. A steadfast volunteer and advocate for the College, he has served as an ICO Trustee since 2008, bringing his leadership, insight, and professional expertise to help advance its mission and vision.
Fittingly, ICO recognized his contribution to the College by conferring upon him an honorary Doctor of Science in Optometry at the 183rd Commencement Ceremony on May 16, 2026. He was honored for his 21 years of exemplary service to ICO and his transformative influence on optometric education, research, and patient care.
“One of the most meaningful aspects of commencement is the connection it creates between generations of optometrists,” said Dr. Colip. “Honoring Dr. Smith during the commencement ceremony reflected not only his extraordinary service and generosity, but also the enduring tradition of alumni helping shape the future of ICO and the profession. It serves as a reminder that leadership and engagement within the ICO community extend far beyond graduation day.”
As ICO graduates prepare to begin their careers, Dr. Smith serves as a powerful example of lifelong connection between the College and its alumni. His leadership and philanthropy reflect a tradition of giving back that continues to help strengthen ICO and support future generations of optometrists.
